An Inception Review

Be The First To Comment
As a long time lucid dreamer, I'd been eagerly awaiting the release of Inception. It is such a rare opportunity that I get to enjoy a sci-fi flick based almost entirely on self-awareness in dreams. I think much of the lucid dreaming community felt the same way.
This movie -- while not actually mentioning the words lucid dreaming once -- gives many courteous nods to the concept of lucidity that will leave you with no doubt of it's intention: to thrust its viewers into the topsy turvy world of unconscious reality. And if you're not a lucid dreamer... well you'll probably love it anyway; there are many other aspects that make Inception a thrilling movie experience.

The Dream is Real

Inception is something else. Directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Memento) - a lucid dreamer himself - this is a work of art designed to push the limits of your imagination. The richly detailed plot twists and turns through imaginary dreamscapes and physical reality. Whether you can actually tell the difference is all part of the awesome journey.

"Dreams feel real while we're in them. It's only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange."

~ Cobb, Inception

Inception is just complex enough to keep the viewer on their toes the whole way through, with a central theme of reality checking, something lucid dreamers will be familiar with. This is the idea of questioning whether you are awake or dreaming, in order to take control of the dream... or wake up. Cobb (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) has a spinning top for this purpose; where in reality it will always fall - but in a dream it will illogically spin on forever. There are several other clues to watch out for, like upside-down clock faces. If you can tell from the outset which scenes are dreams, you will probably enjoy this movie a lot more.
Aside from these tells, the lucid dreamscape is remarkably solid and real - until the dream collapses and it all comes crashing down, Armageddon style.
I was enthralled by the concept of the unconscious thwarting itself in this movie. This is something that happens in lucid dreams all the time. When you don't have a firm grip on your conscious lucidity, your unconscious begins to play tricks on you. This manifests itself in the inability to fly (not ideal at 35,000 feet) or frustration when specific dream figures elude you.
Inception reminds us that no matter how much consciousness we have in our dreams, the unconscious mind still has its own games to play. It is an illogical beast, at times, and intent on delivering us to our worst fears and insecurities, even in lucid dreams. As Cobb himself finds out: your deepest beliefs, however hidden, become real in dreams.

The Rules of Inception

The rules of Inception were admittedly a bit convoluted. I felt myself squirming in my seat when Cobb announced that in order to wake yourself up from a dream, you first have to kill yourself. What happened to simply opening your eyes?
I did lilke, however, the poetic notion of The Kick, required to wake the dreamers from their shared dream scenario. In reality, this feeling of falling that wakes us up is called a hypnic jerk - an involuntary muscle twitch used by the brain to test if the body is awake or asleep. It most often occurs during the onset of dreaming, and bizarrely the unconscious simultaneously incorporates this sensation into the dream scenario. For me personally, hypnic jerks always occur as I'm walking down the street in a dream, and suddenly fall off the kerb...
Inception and Lucid DreamingAnother rule that these advanced oneironauts had to live by was that, because they were sedated, they must not die inside a dream-within-a-dream. Otherwise, they'd descend into limbo, a bland dream world that was slowed down so far, decades in limbo might only translate to minutes in reality. That's a terrifying concept in itself! But don't be fooled by thislucid dreaming myth; where Inception's rules stray from the truth, most people realize it's just a bit of speculative fiction and nothing to get your knickers in a twist about.
Commit to these rules and you will be rewarded with a gripping adventure, delving deeper into lucid dreamscapes which are rarely stable and open to invasion by unconscious demons operating on an entirely different agenda.

The People Behind The Dream

Inception has an all-star cast: Leo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun), Ellen Page (Juno), Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later), Marion Cotillard (The Passionate Life of Edith Piaf), Ken Wantanabe (Letters from Iwo Jima) and with brief appearances from Michael Caine and Pete Postlethwaite.

"You remind me of someone... a man I met in a half-remembered dream. He was possessed of some radical notions." ~ Saito, Inception

These lucid dream explorers form a crack team which penetrates the minds of other dreamers and roots around in their unconscious, looking for secrets.
Inception is, for Cobb, one final job in which he must plant an idea in the mind of Fischer (Murphy). If successful, he can return to his family, free of criminal charges arising from corporate espionage, and live the life of his dreams...
The score to Inception (created by Hans Zimmer) adds a further dimension to this story, drawing us into the infinite lucid dream world. Zimmer added a curious musical cue to denote when the dreamers moved from one level of reality to another: he slowed down the "wake-up music" (Edith Piaf's 1960Non, je ne Regrette Rien) to create the haunting brass blares which recur throughout the movie and trailer. Check out this neat Inception music cue to see the effect broken down.

Final Thoughts

Inception
If the central plot of Inception sounds too predictable - don't worry, because this movie is a lot more complex than any non-spoiler synopsis will have you believe.Inception weaves multiple threads into an exquisite tapestry, leaving you reeling as you walk out of the movie theater with myriad questions and insights. The ending is deliciously ambiguous allowing for post-movie debate.
There are parts of this movie that resonate with all-time sci-fi favorites. At times, Inception felt like The Matrix (for its original reality-busting storyline and special effects) as well as Donnie Darko (for its mysterious and interpretive themes and conclusion).
As a whole, this is an original and gripping movie balanced on the concept of lucid dreaming and the wily unconscious mind. Even with extended gunfire scenes (its only real downfall, in my opinion) there is so much thought-provoking material here to keep you entertained for the long haul. Inception is a must-see movie for lucid dreamers and definitely among my new top ten favorites.

AcousticSheep SleepPhones (Wireless Headphones) Review

Be The First To Comment
This week I was the recipient of a ten-year anniversary gift from Pete (meaning I opened a package with his name on it and was all "Hey cool! Is this for me?!"). The gift was a set of AcousticSheep SleepPhones - wireless headphones embedded in a plush headband which receives audio from your nearest device.

AcousticSheep SleepPhones (Wireless Headphones) Review
The main reason he got this for me was to listen to soundscapes, music and podcasts more comfortably in bed. I use audios to kick start the meditative mind awake/body asleep state which is great practise for lucid dreaming.
But it's also a top selling product among joggers, air travelers, the partners of snorers, and insomniacs. And so AcousticSheep SleepPhones have applications in entertainment, leisure, sport and sleep therapy.
Until now, Pete had noticed I've been listening to earphones in bed at night, which has the major drawback of not being able to lie on your side (or the pressure creates pain in one ear).
I've also been known to roll over and unwittingly drag my tablet off the bedside table by the attached wires. The ensuing crash of electronics woke up all manner of dogs and toddlers who were sleeping soundly in the bedroom moments before.
I thought this was a pretty solution and I was excited to try it out.

AcousticSheep Set Up

Once we agreed I would stop opening exciting-looking packages with Pete's name on them, I was ready to use my new device.
Pairing AcousticSheep with a Bluetooth Device is Easy
It's a simple set-up job: remove the control pad from the headband and switch it on by holding the middle button down until it flashes red. It then automatically pairs with your nearest Bluetooth device.
The control pad comes out of the box with a 50% charge (with a full battery life lasting 10-13 hours) so you're ready to start using your wireless headphones immediately.

Using Your AcousticSheep

How to Use Your AcousticSheep SleepPhones
Despite the pictures, I suggest you put the headband on with the logo at the back. This ensures the headphones (which are flat pads, by the way) are aligned with your ears. You can scootch them round further for better alignment or remove them completely to wash the headband, in case you have a smelly head.
I'm not saying you do have a smelly head, I'm just saying you might. It's probably not my call to make, seeing as I've not smelled your head before.
The actual experience of wearing sleepphones is really cool. The sound quality to me is superb. And the fact that the headphones are wire-free and snuggled up against your head makes it an immersive experience listening to gentle music and white noise in your meditation training.
(If you want a recommendation, listen to a free sample of BlissCoded Sound. This is great for meditation and insomnia, especially when your mind won't shut down and the mental chatter is incessant.)

AcousticSheep SleepPhones
Now, I'm a technological imbecile and have no idea how Bluetooth works - so I wandered around the house with the headband on to see how far the sound would follow me.
As it turned out, I couldn't manage to lose the connection on my travels, so I guess it's just like having wireless internet in your house; it reaches everywhere.
There are also versions of the AcousticSheep for joggers (sweat resistent - good news for the smellyheads) and wired versions for smaller budgets (students, I'm thinking of you).

Which Version?

There are three main variations of AcousticSheep headphones and this review is about the latest wireless version. If you're investing in this type of technology I certainly recommend the wireless.
Here's a glance at how the different models compare:

The AcousticSheep Wireless SleepPhones are among the bestselling sleep gadgets on Amazon. It's a neat tool for inducing meditative states and for relaxing into a sleep state at night. I highly recommended it.

Galantamine Review: Smart Nutrition Have Got It Right!

Be The First To Comment
I recently tested some Galantamine sent to me by Smart Nutrition to boost my lucid dreams. This is my review of Galantamine, and their service/product.
To start off with, up until I tried their sample I hadn’t really had much experience with Galantamine. I figured that it would be best to take in the early morning, as this would target the REM sleep. After some research this assumption was proved correct.
I heard stories of people who’d tried it as soon as they went to sleep and they’d experienced all sorts of horrible things like –
– Terrifying nightmares that never seemed to end
– Scary ‘real feeling’ memories that never happened
– Or just not being able to sleep properly at all
– Feeling like their head was being ‘scraped along the bottom of an iceberg’
Luckily I didn’t experience this as I took it as I was doing a WBTB. This is therefore the best way I’d suggest to take Galantamine if you’re trying to have a lucid dream, and not a terrifying nightmare experience. Okay, let’s get into my official review of Galantamine.

Galantamine from Smart Nutrition

I was very happy to receive my bottle of Galantamine in a fairly short time.
It was coming from a location far away from where I live yet the delivery didn’t take very long at all. The bottle cam packaged nicely in a box with bubble wrap, and there was no damage to the packaging.
Smart Nutrition Galantamine review
The company and team replied swiftly to all of my emails, and I have had a nice conversation with the Smart Nutrition team. They sell various supplements on their online shop, and we agreed that Galantamine would be the most appropriate product for lucid dreaming.

Why buy Galantamine from Smart Nutrition?

Well, firstly they have great customer service, which is what you want when buying anything really. Especially when buying things online, you want to make sure that you can contact SOMEONE about the purchase, in case something goes wrong.
I love the products they offer as well, as in a short phrase, they WORK.
I tried Galantamine and had a lucid dream 4 out of the 5 nights I tried it initially. I now use it now and then to have a more vivid lucid dream and it works almost every time. Of course it won’t work EVERY time, because nothing can work every time. It comes pretty close though!

How to use Galantamine for lucid dreams properly

There are a few tips I would give you for using Galantamine to boost your dreams, and there are some things you definitely want to avoid!
Firstly, make sure you actually know what lucid dreaming is and how to do it. If you don’t, it won’t really do much for you other than maybe give you some vivid normal dreams. This is still cool, but to get the most out of it, you’ll want to at least know what you’re doing.
Also, for maybe a week before you use it try and make an EXTRA effort with reality checks, writing dreams down and having lucid dreaming ‘on your mind’.
This will make sure you don’t have what happened to me – I lost focus for a few weeks before trying it and the first lucid dream was very hazy. This isn’t because of the product, but because I’d let my dreaming habits ‘slip’. Don’t do that.
Make sure that you’re getting the most out of your Galantamine and keep up your lucid dreaming habits, skills and practice before you actually use it. It doesn’t make sense spending money on Galantamine of any lucid dreaming supplement if you’re not going to put the work in and use it properly.
Dream diary logging! Another thing is make sure you write in your dream diary the nights you used Galantamine. This will help you to look back and see which nights you had the best lucid dreams and what caused them.
If you don’t do this, then you won’t know which nights you tried to lucid dream with Galantamine and you’ll never know where to improve and what to focus on in the future. Just write a small note at the top of the nights you used it for future reference. You’ll thank yourself for doing this later, trust me.

Keep it by your bed

What I did is I kept the bottle right next to my bed so that when I woke up to do my WBTB or other technique, it was right there ready for me to take.
Keep your Galantamine by yourr bed for lucid dreamsKeep your Galantamine by yourr bed for lucid dreams
Make sure you’ve got some water to take with it as well. Some people find they need to eat a small amount with the supplement to counteract any small feelings of nausea. I was fine just taking it with water but if you need food, keep that by you bed also.

Mix it with the Wake Back To Bed technique

The WBTB technique is a great partner to Galantamine because it targets your REM sleep In the early morning.
The half life of Galantamine (This means the time it takes for over half of the substance to decay or be absorbed by your body) is about 3-5 hours.
This means that if you take it at the START of the night you won’t feel the effects that much when it comes to the REM sleep in the early morning. It’s strongest when you take it at about 3-4AM and then do a WBTB.
Of course, experiment with this yourself.

You can also use the SSILD technique

Another lucid dreaming method you can use with Galantamine is the Senses induced lucid dreaming technique. This is a very beginner friendly method which goes hand in hand with supplement use in the early morning.
You should try and find which technique works the best for you with this supplement.

Side effects of Galantamine

Some side effects I found were that in the day time the day after I had increased focus and mental energy. There are other Nootropics which have a similar effect as well.
Galantamine is primarily used to get ‘dream support’ but it can give you a daytime boost as well!
It sounds great, and it is but there are some warnings I’d give you as well. Firstly, don’t use it all the time. There have been reports that for increased use, (And I mean heavy amounts daily for several weeks) you’ll get side effects like –
Nausea
Insomnia
Trouble concentrating
But DON’T WORRY these side effects only usually occur when you take MUCH MORE than the suggested daily does for several weeks, without a break.
If you use it with the suggested dose every few days you’ll be fine! I would suggest if you’re going to take it as part of your lucid dreaming life to have a Galantamine night maybe 1-2 times a week at most.
This way it will be the most effective, you won’t get any side effects and you’ll also give yourself the chance to improve at lucid dreaming naturally, so you’re not so reliant on supplements.

Summary of my Galantamine review

Smart Nutrition have a great source of Galantamine, which you can get here.
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed my review of Galantamine by Smart Nutrition. You can find many more lucid dreaming supplements if this doesn’t sound like it’s for you, and there are also many Nootropics you can use for lucid dreams. You can buy Galantamine DIRECTLY from this website using the shopping cart below this paragraph.
Feel free to bookmark this post for future reference if you’re interested in purchasing Galantamine for your dreams!
